Forma vs Ultherapy: Which one is better for skin tightening? Let’s be honest: Skin care alone won’t tighten your skin. And going for a face lift seems too risky…right. A non-invasive treatment seems to be the best option to turn back the clock a few years, but which one is best? There is a lot of noise about non-invasive skin tightening. Promises of tighter skin, brighter skin, more youthful appearance, minimal downtime…. But most people really want stronger skin that still looks like theirs. Noticeable results without invasive procedures. In this article, I’ll explain these two common treatments, including what results you can realistically expect, side effects, and more.
Pharma vs Ultherapy: What are they?
Forma is a non-invasive skin tightening treatment that uses radiofrequency energy. More specifically, it (specifically, uses bipolar radiofrequency technology delivered via a hand-held device that glides over the surface of the skin in circular motions). If you’ve ever heard people compare it to a hot-stone massage, it’s no accident. It feels warm and comfortable.
Ultherapy treatment, on the other hand, uses micro-focused ultrasound. This is not the same as the ultrasound used in pregnancy scans. This is targeted ultrasound energy that is delivered to specific depths into the deeper layers of the skin and underlying tissues. Ultherapy is designed to reach the same structural layers addressed in a surgical facelift, without actually cutting the skin. This is a non-surgical skin tightening procedure, but it is not as gentle as radiofrequency treatments.
How do they work?
Both have been popular choices for skin elasticity in recent years. Both are marketed as non-invasive skin rejuvenation. Both aim to stimulate the body’s natural collagen production. But they rely on very different technologies.
form
Forma works by delivering controlled RF energy into the dermis. The goal is to heat the skin tissue to the optimal temperature, usually around 40 to 43 degrees Celsius. That heat causes controlled thermal damage to the collagen fibers. When collagen fibers are heated, they contract. Over time, the body responds by increasing collagen and elastin production. This means new collagen, improved skin elasticity, and gradually firmer skin.
Radiofrequency energy does not depend on light or pigmentation, making it safe for many skin types. It can treat different areas of the face and even different areas of the body. It targets the middle skin rather than the very deep structural layers. There is evidence that non-ablative radiofrequency treatments increase collagen types I and III and improve skin texture and skin tone.
That said, note that most of the peer reviewed data is on radiofrequency technology in general, not on skin tightening as branded devices specifically. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. This means that they have not tested this particular device yet. Forma usually requires several treatment sessions. Consider weekly sessions over a month or more, followed by maintenance treatments for optimal results.
Ultherapy
Ultherapy uses ultrasound technology, specifically micro-focused ultrasound with visualization. It delivers ultrasound waves at precise depths, including the superficial musculoaponeurotic system, often referred to as the SMAS layer. This is deeper than most radiofrequency treatments can reach. When ultrasound energy hits the deeper layers of the skin, it creates tiny thermal coagulation points. The surrounding tissues are left intact, but those focused points trigger collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin and underlying tissues.
Studies have shown that micro-focused ultrasound and concluded that it is effective in improving skin laxity. And is generally safe for most people. Main difference from forma? Ultherapy is usually a single session, more intensive treatment that works at a deeper level. Forma is usually a series of gentle sessions that work more superficially.
What does each non-invasive procedure feel like?
This may seem superficial, but it is not. Comfort often determines whether you complete your treatment plan.
The form feels warm. Many people describe it as a hot stone massage. The hand-held device rotates in a circular motion over the treated area. In most cases, numbing cream is not needed. You can return to normal activities immediately. This is an excellent option if you have a busy schedule and want minimal downtime.
Ultherapy is different. Because it targets the deeper layers of the skin, it may feel sharp or intense. Some patients describe it as brief jolts of warmth or discomfort in the jaw line or brow area. For this reason, a good doctor will prescribe numbing medication or pain relief. Don’t feel shy about taking it. Beauty should not hurt. Recovery time is still shorter than invasive procedures, but you may experience tenderness for a few days.
Pharma vs Ultherapy: Side Effects and Recovery Period
No non-invasive procedure is completely risk-free. Because the radiofrequency energy does not break the skin surface, side effects with Forma are minimal. Expect mild redness and slight swelling in the treated area that usually resolve within a few hours. Most people go straight back to daily activities.
With Ultherapy, side effects may include redness, swelling, bruising, and tenderness. In rare cases, people have reported temporary nerve irritation. The potential risks are still much lower than invasive procedures, but it’s honest to say that Ultherapy is a more intensive treatment.
Connected: Does Ultherapy hurt?
Pharma vs Ultherapy: Which is a Good Candidate?
form Can be a great option if:
- your skin is slightly loose
- You want a gradual improvement in skin elasticity
- You prefer a comfortable, relaxing experience
- Whether you’re targeting smaller areas or want overall skin rejuvenation
- You are committed to multiple sessions and maintenance treatments
- It may also be useful for improving skin texture, fine lines, and even mild acne scars or stretch marks on certain areas of the body.
ultratherapy Might be better if:
- The skin around your jaw line or neck is moderately loose
- You are looking for a noticeable lift, especially in the brow lift area
- You want a session with long-lasting results
- You are comfortable with more intensive treatment
FYI, if you have significant sagging, nothing will replace a surgical lift. In addition, medical history also matters. Some implants or conditions may limit the use of radiofrequency treatment or ultrasound energy. Proper counseling is necessary.
How long do the results last?
Forma’s results are gradual. You may notice brighter skin and tighter skin after a few sessions, but best results appear after completing the full treatment plan. Because collagen continues to be produced, results can last for several months, but maintenance treatments are usually recommended.
Ultherapy begins to show noticeable results in two to three months with the formation of new collagen. Many patients see improvement for a year or more after a single session. How long results last depends on age, underlying skin laxity, and the body’s natural collagen production.
bottom line
There is no universal best approach. There’s only the best approach for your skin, your goals, your tolerance, and your schedule. If you want a gentle, non-invasive way to improve the appearance of skin, boost collagen fibers, and maintain younger-looking skin over time, Forma Skin Tightening is a great option. If you want a deeper lift, a natural lift along the jawline or browbones, and you’re willing to accept a more intense experience for potentially longer-lasting results, Ultherapy may be the right treatment. When in doubt, make sure you ask as many questions as possible during your consultation, so you can make an informed decision and do what’s best for you.
