Tulsa, Okla. – It’s heart month and local doctors are encouraging you to adopt heart-healthy habits.
Doctors say that by developing healthy habits now, you can avoid many problems in the future.
Dr. AJ Kane is a cardiologist at Ascension St. John. He suggests that people should try to work out for 150 minutes a week and keep an eye on their diet.
“Lifestyle is the way to go. A heart-healthy diet, low in saturated and saturated fat, avoiding too many starchy carbs, fruits and vegetables, and of course exercise is very important,” Dr. Kane said.
He wants people to be aware of symptoms of heart disease like shortness of breath, chest pressure and nausea.
Dr. Kane says even if symptoms are minor, see your doctor.
“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had people at home with symptoms they thought were indigestion and a heart attack, so it’s always good to talk to a professional,” Dr. Kane said.
He says diabetes, high blood pressure, increased cholesterol, obesity and genetics can all make heart disease more likely, so it’s important to practice heart health habits now.
“This is important, heart disease is the number one cause of mortality in America. Often the symptoms are subtle. They are not very obvious, so early detection and prevention is the number one way to stay healthy and avoid having surgery or a stent before you have one,” said Dr. Kane.
If you are concerned, you should get checked for heart disease.
