When it comes to lash serums, certain formulas work for some people; others have sensitive eyes that require a different approach. That usually means no prostaglandin analogs (you’ve probably heard of bimatoprost), which is a hotly debated ingredient in many popular lash serums and can cause inflammation and other side effects like red eyes. For me personally, I can use either formula and I’m OK, thankfully, because I’m a lash serum loyalist. As a blonde with light eyelashes, I love the way a good lash serum transforms my overall look, especially when I use mascara. A longtime fan of Grande’s original GrandeLASH-MD, I was very excited to try this new one, GrandeLASH-Sensitive ($48), and it’s a great alternative for those with sensitive eyes. Here’s my honest review.

The Benefits of This Lash Serum for Sensitive Eyes

As a contact lens wearer with hazel eyes, you’d think I’d be more sensitive to eye makeup and lash serums, but thankfully (knock on wood), it hasn’t been an issue. However, I am aware of the risks associated with using products containing prostaglandin analogs, and I’m excited to see that there are now effective formulas made without them, such as this one. Some of those I’ve tried over the years have been super oily, messy and downright don’t work, but this one contains Grande Cosmetics’ LashCatalyst peptide complex, which is backed by years of research.

The serum also contains biotin like the original formula, which supports the production of keratin. This ingredient is an essential protein for strengthening the lashes and reducing breakage and fallout. Of course there will always be fallout because our eyelashes run on a cycle like our hair, and they will shed when it’s time. Other key ingredients include chamomile and green tea, which lend a soothing effect, and hyaluronic acid to hydrate dry, brittle lashes. Like hydrated skin, hydrated lashes look better!

In a 16-week consumer study, 96 percent of participants using the ophthalmologist-tested serum said it didn’t irritate their eyes or cause redness, and reported seeing thicker-looking lashes. Additionally, 100 percent of participants experienced less lash fallout, and 93 percent reported seeing stronger, healthier, longer-looking lashes. For me personally, the difference between this sensitive formula and the original is that this one takes longer to see a change. The brand describes it as “gradual” with results in six weeks versus four. However, I’ve seen results sooner than that with both of them. It’s also fair to say the results weren’t as dramatic, but that was to be expected without the prostaglandins involved.

How to Use It

Trace your upper lash line with the serum on each eye, like you would liquid eyeliner, except it’s clear and so easy. Apply it morning and night (you only need to dip into the tube once each time), and don’t let it get into your eyes. You don’t need to apply any on your lower lash line. Let the serum dry for a couple minutes before applying any other products or laying down. Use the lash serum every day until you get the results you want, and then you can switch to every other day to maintain your look.

It’s important to note that just because this serum is designed for sensitive eyes doesn’t mean it will be a fit for absolutely everyone. There are always exceptions to the rule, so if you have extra sensitive eyes or eyelid skin, the brand recommends starting slow. Use the serum once every other day and increase to twice a day when you feel comfortable doing so.
